LAVC Offering Free Classes for Career Advancement

 

For those who aren't in our current Cohort of LA Fellows, LA Valley College is offering another FREE resource to brush up on job seeking skills and get a leg up on your next career move. This class is open to anyone: former Fellows, potential Fellows, students, or interested members of the community, regardless of your current employment status. Three Orientation Dates Added for Cohort 10

Due to the tremendous response we've received after the recent KTLA story on the program, three additional LA Fellows orientations have been added for the class that will begin training on July 28th, Cohort 10. We are looking for unemployed midcareer professionals who are motivated, hard-working and enthusiastic, with solid work experience, who are looking for their next career opportunity.

LA Fellows receive free professional training covering executive level topics including advanced job search techniques, critical thinking, negotiating, and advanced computer skills. LA Fellows also volunteer their time and talents by sharing their professional expertise at local nonprofit organizations through meaningful project based roles. Throughout the program, LA Fellows will gain invaluable career growth skills, job search assistance, and receive the opportunity to give back to the community while they seek full-time employment.

Interested job seekers will need to attend one orientation in order for their application to be considered.

LA Fellows Champion Sue Carleo Recognized as a Champion of Education

The Valley Economic Alliance held its 14th annual Steve Allen Excellence in Education awards ceremony at Valley Presbyterian Hospital in Van Nuys on Monday, May 19th. The awards, named after longtime Valley resident and legendary entertainer Steve Allen, salute the national achievements of local schools and people.

“When you see these outstanding examples of success, it’s really heartwarming,” Alliance officer David Fleming said.

This year’s Champion of Education Award went to former Los Angeles Valley College President Sue Carleo. During her five-year tenure, Carleo helped strengthen communication between school officials and community members. She retired last year.

Dr. Carleo was instrumental in making the connection between the problems of rising unemployment and the crisis of decreased resources in the nonprofit sector and how placing skilled, unemployed professionals in meaningful roles of volunteerism could work to solve both issues. It was largely through her vision that the LA Fellows program was born, and through her guidance and care that it has flourished and grown into the sucess it is today.

“Education is the way to pass on the best values of the present to our future generations,” Carleo said as she received the award from the Alliance. “I wish you all the best as you continue this good work, and I am proud to have been part of it.”

Another Free Workshop: Creativity & Innovation

Team Business Burbank is back this week with another valuable FREE workshop. This workshop features another LA Fellow favorite, Larry Braman, who's also the president of Global Career Consulting & Placement, where he draws on his experience in both the business and creative worlds to help individuals and teams create more fulfilling and productive careers. He is known for delivering fun, interactive, and meaningful learning experiences. The approach of this workshop is that everyone has tremendous creative potential. It may be challenging at times to access it—but it’s there.

If you’re not able to innovate and enable your team to do the same, your career —and your team’s output—may suffer.

Learn and experience new ways to:

· Access your creativity at work and beyond

· Inspire and unleash creativity in your teams

LA Fellows Featured on KTLA's Money Smart Segment

The LA Fellows program was featured on a recent Money Smart segment of KTLA Channel 5 News (Los Angeles). Our own Nick Koutouras from Cohort 2 was interviewed, as was Lennie Ciufo, Director of the Job Training Department at Los Angeles Valley College, out of which LA Fellows operates. It aired on the KTLA News at 10 on Monday, May 5, 2014, with Glen Walker reporting.
